AN army of volunteers have thanked the community for their support as they continue to help Wrexham's homeless and most vulnerable.

Matty Evans, Hel Smart, Corrina Edwards, Debbie Evans and Denise Parry have been going out into Wrexham every week to provide hot meals, food parcels, puddings and clothes to the homeless.

Hel, from Denbighshire, told the Leader that although homeless people were allowed to stay in hotel and accommodation rooms, they had no cooking facilities etc.

But communities and other volunteer groups have jumped on board to help the team deliver fresh meals and clothing donations every week, including hot chocolates with cream and marshmallows.

She added: "Each week we take out 30 meals, donations and hot puddings. We see at least 30 people a week who , although are in accommodation, they have no cooking facilities.

"They need that emotional support. A lot of the people we meet have hit rock bottom. It's not just donations they need. When out on the streets, some were like a family but now they are in accommodation, which had to be done, they are not allowed to mingle due to Covid.

"So they often still take to the streets to be with their friends. They need that mental support, it's the mental side of it.

"We decided to help because Wales wasn't doing anything to help them."

Bagillt's Matty Evans added: "We would like to say a big thank you to the people that help and the communities across Denbighshire and Bagillt.

"And thanks to First Option Storage in Denbigh who offered us use of a storage facility to keep all of our donations.

"All of the people coming together to make it work is great.

"The council didn't like us doing it but these people need our help. They aren't getting the services that we offer, they need that emotional support."

The team took to social media to also express their thanks.

They wrote: "Very wet and windy visit today! We didn’t expect to see many but again we gave out 30 food parcels, hot meals, hot puds by our amazing Nelly Smyth, lots of compliments on the fish pie, also sandwiches by Audrey from Bagillt that does each month.

"This week the cakes come from Bagillt community, so nice to have them on board . Thank you all for the the clothing donations and especially for the food donations.

"We had a new volunteer today who has agreed to help weekly who is someone that visited us weekly for the last two years but is in a good place with his life, but struggling as before Covid he volunteered daily in different locations, since Covid he’s found it hard like many and very isolating and lonely. We also had Debbie back.
