CLWYD South’s MP has raised the issue of help available for local exporters.

Simon Baynes MP addressed concerns to the Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Exports, Graham Stuart MP, via a virtual link to the House of Commons Chamber on Thursday, March 25.

He asked what the Department for International Trade was doing to help promote exporters in Clwyd South and elsewhere in Wales.

Ahead of St David's Day next week, Mr Baynes used the opportunity to praise local Welsh exporters and their products, such as the Rhug Estate's famous Welsh beef and lamb, AE Sewing Machines in Ruabon and Ifor Williams Trailers from Clywd South.

In response, Graham Stuart MP, said: “It is never too early to celebrate St David’s day and the doughty exporters of Clwyd South, as well as the rest of the principality. We are lowering barriers to Welsh exporters through trade deals, supporting them through staff in 119 countries, organising trade missions, providing online resources and championing them at international events.

“We have a long-standing relationship with the Rhug Estate, and we continue to support Welsh produce in particular, as part of both the Food is GREAT campaign and the Open Doors campaign, announced with fanfare only this week by the Secretary of State.”

Speaking later, Mr Baynes said: “I’m delighted by the Minister’s response. In particular, I was very pleased to hear that the UK Government is putting the promotion of Welsh produce at the heart of its new independent British trade policy, which will benefit Welsh exporters and consumers alike now that we’ve left the European Union.

“It’s more important than ever because of the Covid-19 pandemic that we support our local exporters to get the best possible opportunities here in the UK and abroad.

“And the benefits to companies and jobs in Clwyd South will hopefully benefit local residents for many more St David's Days to come.”
