A NEW touring caravan site with 38 pitches could be created on the edge of Wrexham county borough.

Proposals have been put forward which would result in the development of agricultural land off the A539 in Hanmer.

An amenity block with toilets, showers and washing up facilities would also be built at the site, which sits near the Shropshire border.

Consultants acting on behalf of applicants C.L. Edwards and Son said the plans would benefit the area by attracting tourists and improving the local economy.

They added it would also meet the demand for staycations sparked by the coronavirus pandemic.

In a planning statement, they said: “The proposed development involves the creation of tourist accommodation in the form of a touring caravan site which is a use allowed under the Wrexham Unitary Development Plan.

“The site will be located with an arable field and screened by existing hedges and trees.

“Tourist accommodation is important to the Welsh economy and creates income and jobs, in additional to social benefits.

“The demand for caravan sites in Wales is increasing and this will be fuelled by the current coronavirus pandemic and uncertainty surrounding Brexit.

“It is considered that the proposed development would not give rise to unacceptably adverse impacts on the environment, local amenities or other interests of acknowledged importance.”

It’s proposed that the caravan site will be accessed by the current entrance to the field off the A539, which will be improved as part of the scheme.

CCTV cameras and an alarmed security barrier would also be installed to address any safety issues.

Meanwhile, an ecology report has recommended that a series of wildlife corridors should be created for species such as badgers, hedgehogs and bumblebees.

The local authority is expected to make a decision on the plans at a later date.
