AN ELDERLY man whose family had taken great efforts to support him living independently died after a fall at home.

Percy Fermor, originally from Huna in Scotland, was found on the floor next to his bed at his home in Tir Wat, Mynydd Isa, by his son on September 20 last year.

His mobility had been impaired following a triple heart bypass three years previous.

Keith Fermor told the inquest at County Hall in Ruthin that he had placed stools around the home as his 85-year-old father could rest as he found it difficult to walk, even from one room to another, without resting.

He had also installed CCTV to make sure his father was ok and that is how he saw he had suffered a fall, the day after they had spent the day together along with other family members for Mr Fermor's birthday.

Mr Fermor had fallen between his bed and the wall of the bathroom, and his zimmer frame had toppled on top of him.

When he was admitted to Wrexham Maelor Hospital it was found he had broken every rib on the right side of his body and another four on the left.

Despite these injuries, Mr Fermor had been relatively jolly while in hospital.

However, as his condition got worse, doctors spoke to him about how CPR would not be possible if he lost conciousness due to his injuries and he made the decision not to be resuscitated if that happened.

On September 24, Mr Fermor was given end of life palliative care. He passed away at 9.42pm.

Recording a conclusion of accidental death, Coroner for North Wales East and Central said Mr Fermor's family had taken every effort to support him living in his own home.

He said: "He lived to a good age with the love and support of his family around him."
