A MOLD club has donated hundreds of pounds to a good cause following a fundraising activity.

In March last year the annual International Quiz of the Rotary Club of Mold was held in support of Solar Aid.

The small registered charity provides simple, easy to use solar lighting equipment for the benefit of rural communities in Malawi and Zambia.

A spokesman for the club said: "Millions of people in Sub Saharan Africa have to rely on dangerous, expensive and polluting ways to light their homes.

"For each £4 raised Solar Aid can sell and distribute solar lights in remote locations, providing clean, safe and affordable light.

"Each solar light shining leads to an hour of study each night.

"Over three years, that is more than 1,000 hours of extra study.

"Over this time, it also averts the emission of over a tonne of CO2, as kerosene lamps and candles are no longer being used.

"Perhaps most importantly, families save almost £160 a year from no longer buying kerosene, candles and batteries, money that can be used for other important purposes.

"The sum raised by the Rotary Club’s Quiz has been match funded by the Rotary District Committee and our cheque of £676.49 has been presented to Solar Aid and will allow for the purchase of 169 Solar lamps.

"To all our supporters, the Rotary Club of Mold extends its most grateful thanks for their generosity."
