SCAMMERS posing as utility workers have been visiting elderly Wrexham residents, police have said.

North Wales Police was alerted on Monday to two incidents which happened at the end of last week in Rhos and Chirk.

According to the force, in both instances elderly residents were visited by people claiming to be from the water board, or gas and electric companies.

"Please advise any elderly or vulnerable relatives that if they're unsure of who the person is and the visit has not been organised prior to not answer the door and make contact themselves directly to the company, a spokesman said."

A similar warning came from the force's community safety team, a spokesman for which said: "Bogus callers have been active in the Wrexham area posing as Utility Officials.

"Utility workers do not cold call. Please inform vulnerable neighbours who may not be on social media.

"Never pass bank details to anyone. Always use a door chain when answering the door."
