YOUNGSTERS from Wrexham have joined forces to create their own rap song during Covid-19.

The Land, which is a junk playground in Plas Madoc, devised new ways to connect with young people across the estate in order to facilitate creative output during this difficult time.

Playworkers from the Land have been making palette furniture for residents, moving all their social events online and conducting online quizzes to bring the community together.

Recently, they have collaborated with Community Music Wales to bring experienced musicians, Martin Daws, a spoken word poet, writer and creative educator and Owen Mclean, a creative rhythmic poet and song writer, together with youngsters virtually to write a rap about their area.

The Leader:

The sessions have been running since March and both facilitators have supported the young people to write and record their own rap.

The rap is titled, ‘This if our Land’, shows the appreciation from the young people to the playworkers and facilitators, who have enabled the young residents to express their thoughts and ideas through music, as well as provide a virtual creative output during the pandemic.

Talking about his experience with the young people, Mr Daws, said: "Being welcomed into the AVOW community and supported to make a positive contribution to the great work already happening there has been a really special experience which I treasure.

"Thank you to everyone."

A spokesperson for AVOW, said: "Although closed since March, the playground has continued to support the young people of Plas Madoc and playworkers continue to play a large part in children and young people’s live.

"The young people will continue to work on their single until 2021, when Martin and Owen will join us again to record the single and an accompanying music video.

"The single released in 2021, with a live performance from young people when events recommence in the new year."
