By Hannah Blythyn, MS for Delyn

I would like to start by wishing Leader readers a Happy New Year, and say that I hope you and your loved ones had a safe Christmas.

2021 begins with another milestone in the fight against coronavirus, with the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine approved for use in the UK and the first doses administered earlier this week. Though this is an extremely positive step forward, we should not and must not, be under any illusion as to the seriousness of the situation we face. Coronavirus cases continue to rise in our corner of the country and so does the impact of the virus on our NHS and those that work within it.

I completely appreciate that people will be anxious to learn when they will receive the vaccine and worry when they hear of others receiving it. Please be assured that our hard working NHS staff are working hard to deliver the vaccine to those eligible based on the same priority groups which are being used across the UK. The introduction of the new vaccination programme will mean that more people can receive a level of protection from this awful virus, at a faster pace. So please, do your best to remain patient and wait to be offered an appointment by Betsi Cadwaladr UHB.

I believe it is important to challenge misinformation and political opportunism, particularly when it comes to an issue as important as someone's health. That is why I am continuing to do all I can to share accurate, up-to-date, information regarding the situation here in Flintshire, and across Wales, and about the vaccination programme.

Whilst the pace of the vaccination programme quickens, the restrictions on the way we live our lives remain necessary to keep us safe and health. The responsibility lies with each of us to continue to practice good hand hygiene, social distancing and think about what we should do, not can do.

The situation we find ourselves in will continue to be reviewed by the Welsh Government and any changes to the restrictions will be in line with the updated Coronavirus Control Plan. I regularly update my Facebook page - Hannah Blythyn MS - with announcements from the Welsh Government, Betsi Cadwaladr UHB and Flintshire County Council, and will continue to do so.

Despite the regular and growing abuse I receive on social media and in emails, it is in my DNA to both advocate for our area and to do all that I can to help keep us safe. With a new year starting, I want to reaffirm my commitment to residents, community groups and businesses across Delyn that I will continue to stand up for the community that shaped me.

I will continue to use my social media and direct correspondence with constituents to share the most up to date information. If you do have any queries then please get in touch with me at Hannah.Blythyn@senedd.wales or on 01352 762102, and I will do my best to support you.
