WREXHAM residents have been urged to follow the rules over Christmas - or face potential police enforcement.

Alert level 4 became active from midnight, December 20, with previous relaxations cut down over the Christmas celebration period.

First Minister Mark Drakeford described the new strain of Covid-19 as "highly infectious" and said the situation is "very serious."

He announced that only two households can join on Christmas Day only.

Wrexham Inspector Victor Powell has urged residents to make sure they follow the rules.

He said: "The rules have been very clearly laid out by the Welsh Government and they have been set out for a reason.

"They are there to protect us all and i would urge people to please follow them.

"Officers will be out and we will use the enforcement aspect for people who are clearly breaching the rules."

Insp Powell said compliance with the rules so far in the town has been good, with shops and shoppers observing queueing systems and social distancing requirements.

In a statement at the weekend, Mr Drakeford said that the scientific evidence suggested the new strain of the virus is present throughout Wales.

He said: “Throughout the public health emergency, we have had to respond quickly to the rapid changes, which have been so typical of coronavirus.

“Today has been one of those days when new information has required an immediate response. The situation is incredibly serious. I cannot overstate this.”
