A SOLDIER from Wrexham died due to complications following self-inflicted neck injuries, an inquest heard.

Nicholas Richard Edwards, 27, was pronounced dead at Wrexham Maelor Hospital's intensive therapy unit (ITU) on the evening of November 30.

On Monday (December 7) at Denbighshire County Hall in Ruthin an inquest was opened into Mr Edwards' death.

It heard that Mr Edwards, a soldier with the Royal Engineers, had been admitted to hospital with self-inflicted neck laceration injuries on November 29.

He underwent emergency surgery whereby he suffered a cardiac arrest.

The inquest was told the medical team were able to resuscitate Mr Edwards, but it became clear he had suffered a severe brain injuries due to the lack of oxygen supplied to his brain during the cardiac arrest.

Mr Edwards was said to be in an "unsurvivable condition" and died at 7.14 pm on November 30, the inquest heard.

A post-mortem examination into Mr Edwards' death recorded a provisional cause of death as hypoxic brain injury, with carotid artery laceration a contributing factor.

The matter will now move to a full inquest at a date to be fixed.
