A WREXHAM bingo club is calling for help to support struggling households this Christmas.

Mecca Bingo has teamed up with the Rock Chapel to provide hampers containing food and essentials to families.

Paula Bryan, operations manager at Mecca Wrexham, said: "This year we're rolling out our Everyone Deserves a Christmas campaign to provide free hampers to those in most need in the Wrexham community.

"We're looking to work with local businesses who can contribute to the hampers.

"They will be distributed just before Christmas and bring joy to those who need them."

The campaign began four years ago in Swansea and will be happening in Wrexham for the first time.

Business supporters so far include Ann's Travel, Gresford Spar, Morrisons, Primark and New Wave.

Paula added: "Our bingo playing community is renowned for its generosity and community spirit. "Customers have helped us to raise £500 and our Mecca team have all been helping too.

"We have teamed up with the Rock Chapel; they have been delivering care packages for vulnerable people in Wrexham for years now."

Wrexham MP Sarah Atherton dropped in her own donation on Wednesday.

She said: "This year has been unlike any other, as our community has rallied together to support friends, families and neighbours as we have confronted this pandemic head on.

“People have made a great deal of sacrifices to keep each other safe and to support those who have encountered difficulties. Projects such as Mecca’s ‘Everyone Deserves a Christmas’ is a shining example of this community spirit in action here in Wrexham.

“I am proud of our community for rallying around those who may be struggling this year as a result of this pandemic and to ensure that everyone enjoys the festive season.”

Anyone who wants to donate items for the hampers is invited to drop non-perishable foods, treats and toiletries to the Mecca in Wrexham between 12noon and 3pm each day.

Further updates can be found on the Mecca Wrexham Facebook page and for businesses wishing to sponsor or support the scheme, the number to call is 01978 312 717.

The Mecca in Wrexham is also collecting donations for Wrexham Foodbank, including a range of toiletries such as toothpaste and brushes, shampoos, deodorants, as well as non-perishable foods and soups.
