A FIRE sent thick black smoke billowing into the sky in Wrexham.
Crews from Wrexham, Chirk and Llangollen were in attendance throughout Tuesday at a fire in the open at Llwyneinion, Rhosllanerchrugog near Wrexham.
The incident involved one tonne of used tyres which were on fire in a woodland area - the cause of which is thought to be deliberate, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said.
A spokesman said: "We were called to this incident near Rhosllanerchrugog at 9.46am.
"It is a fire in the open and our crews are currently dealing with this, with two appliances currently in attendance."
People living within close proximity to the fire were told to close windows and doors.
Eye witnesses said the fire appeared to be in Llwyneinion Woods - which is ancient woodland.
The blaze was put out shortly before 2pm, the fire service confirmed.
