A QUARTET of councillors are calling for speed calming measures on Mold Road in Connah's Quay.

Councillors Ian Smith, Andy Dunbobbin, Paul Shotton and Ian Dunbar says they have been calling for improvements on the B5126 road, which passes through their neighbouring wards of Connah's Quay South and Golftyn, for years.

The road, which links the communities of Mold, Northop and Connah's Quay, has seen a number of serious accidents over the years.

Now, with a new development of 32 houses at the Broad Oak development off Mold Road, the councillors feel it is more important than ever to get traffic to slow down as the existing measures are not consistent with the conditions.

At the moment the speed limit drops from 50mph to 30mph, with many drivers observed not slowing down until they are well into the lower speed limit as they approach the brow of a hill and the roundabout that connects Mold Road with Ffordd Llanarth where the Morrisons supermarket and Connah's Quay High School are located.

Cllr Dunbar said he was speaking up for the residents of seven houses on left side of the road near Bryn Gwyn Lane whose access is right on the road. Most have mirrors fitted to help them leave their properties, but there have been a number of bumps and near misses, says the councillor.

Cllr Dunbar said: "Those seven houses have no gardens in the front, they are right on the main road. And vehicles fly past there at 50 miles per hour or more.

The councillors say they have no issue with the new development and its developers. But they are frustrated that the road has yet to meet the criteria for a reduced speed limit, signage or a buffer zone.

Cllr Dunbobbin said: "We want something done sooner rather than later. We don't want to be in the position of saying 'we told you so' after there has been another accident."

Flintshire Council was approached for a comment.
