A RHOS dad who broke a woman's nose in a cowardly unprovoked attack has been jailed.

Father-of-two Adam Edwards, of Duke Street, appeared before Mold Crown Court for sentencing on Thursday.

The 33-year-old had previously admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm and criminal damage.

Dafydd Roberts, prosecuting, told the court that Johnstown resident Carla Lovell had been outside her home putting her bins out on the evening of May 20 this year.

She saw Edwards, whom she recognised, acting agitated and apparently under the influence of alcohol and tried to help him.

He took his shirt off and threw it towards her before punching and damaging a fence, as well as striking a lamppost.

Edwards then ran at Ms Lovell and punched her three times to the face, causing her to fall.

Mr Roberts told the court she believed she had lost consciousness momentarily, but Edwards continued with the assault by punching and kicking her as she lay on the ground.

Her friend intervened and he stopped, before running away - leaving Ms Lovell bleeding heavily with a broken and cut nose and bruising to her legs.

She received hospital treatment for the injuries and the next day received a Facebook message from Edwards apologising and telling her he couldn't remember what had happened.

When arrested, Edwards told police he'd buried his grandmother on the day of the offence and had been drinking. He claimed to have no recollection of the incident.

In a victim statement, Ms Lovell said the attack had left her anxious and wanting to move away from the area.

Mark Connor, defending, said: "He knows there can be no excuse or justification for his utterly shameful and reprehensible attack. "This was an entirely unprovoked attack and Ms Lovell was clearly just trying to help him. "He wishes me to apologise to her for the hurt, physically and psychologically, that he has caused her."

Judge Rhys Rowlands told Edwards: "It was a very unpleasant injury.

"You'd been drinking, plainly to excess, and in that state you attacked a woman who was only trying to help you.

"It was a cowardly attack and it continued when she was on the ground. "She has been badly affected by what you did. "Sadly this behaviour is not out of character - this is the third time you've attacked a woman in circumstances which do you no credit at all."

Edwards was jailed for 18 months.
