A WREXHAM man has taken on an epic trek in order to help homeless people.

Nigel Lewis, of Wrexham Savers, is walking just over eight miles per day during the fire-break lockdown with his bichon frise dog Lily.

He aims to have reached 130 miles by the time the lockdown comes to an end and has been raising money via JustGiving to help homeless people in Wrexham during the winter and spring.

Mr Lewis said: "Homelessness is a local and national issue and it doesn't go away despite the many organisations we have working to help.

"We're coming up to winter again and this is a miserable experience in the summer when it is warm and dry.

"But it is even harder for people to keep warm and fed at this time of year - even just having the basic things like access to toilets and water. "I did a fundraiser a few years ago to help organisations helping the homeless so I thought I'd do another.

"I have decided to walk the distance from Wrexham to Cardiff with my dog Lily. "We'll be doing it everyday during the lockdown period and we'll be walking locally around different routes in Wrexham.

"We're out early in the rain and damp."

Mr Lewis set himself a target of £3,000 and he said he was pleased that so far he has raised almost a third of it.

He said the groups, organisations or charities to receive the funds are yet to be confirmed but it will be donated to those helping homeless people in the town.

On his motivation, he added: "This is something I have felt strongly about for a number of years - it is incomprehensible that in modern society we have people on the streets with no accommodation.

"There are many reasons for that and there is support out there but nevertheless we seem to have an amount of people who end up on the streets."
