WREXHAM residents are being urged to recycle as much as they can.

With today (Monday, 21 September), marking the first day of Recycle Week 2020, which is held between September 21-27, Wales already has got a lot to be proud of.

A spokesperson for Wrexham Council, explained: "Wales may be a small country, but when it comes to recycling, we punch way above our weight.

"We’re already the third best recyclers in the world, and now we are backing the Wales-wide movement to make us first."

According to the council, the recent recycling figure for the County Borough is recorded at 69.62 per cent, which they stated shows that 'we are well on the right track', compared to 2002 when it was recorded at just 3 per cent.

The Leader:

However, they are now looking to go the extra mile and they want residents to go on that journey with them.

Cllr David Bithell, deputy leader of Wrexham Council and lead member for environment and transport, said: "Recycle Week is the perfect time to remind ourselves about the things we can or can’t recycle.

"We understand there’s a lot for people to remember and this can sometimes seem overwhelming, but we all need to get involved.

"This year in Wales, we’re being asked to ‘Be Mighty. Recycle'.

"We should be proud of our recycling efforts so far, but we must keep going, and aim to do even better.

"Let’s continue recycling everything we can, from all around the home, to improve our local recycling figures and help get Wales to number one."

Here are some valuable recycling tips provided by the council:

  • Recycling our food waste is one of the easiest ways to give our recycling rate a big boost. Put any food waste – however small the amount – in your food waste caddy to ensure it gets collected every week.
  • Recycling does not stop at the kitchen door – remember to recycle from other rooms too. You would be amazed just how much bathroom waste such as empty shampoo, conditioner, hand soap and shower gel bottles can be recycled.
  • Most people know that water bottles, cans, and paper and card can be recycled, but do not forget that you can also recycle more unusual items such as empty aerosols - and if you are not sure what you can and cannot recycle visit wrexham.gov.uk/recycling
  • Squash plastic bottles and cardboard to save space in your recycling bag, bin, box or caddy.
  • Give bottles, cans, trays and tubs a quick rinse before recycling them to remove any food waste – there is no need to use running water, a quick swill in the washing up bowl will do.

The council spokesperson, added: "If Wales is going to get to number one, we all have to play our part.

"That means spreading the mighty movement word on social media by sharing your recycling pictures and tips using the #mightyrecyclers hashtag."
