CONSTRUCTION has now started at the site of Wrexham’s former police station to build a new supermarket.

The Leader previously reported that retail giant Lidl applied to knock down the high-rise structure at Bodhyfryd in August 2018 to replace it with a new store measuring 1,325 square metres.

It follows the closure of the North Wales Police base last year, which saw officers move to a new £21.5m building in Llay.

A Lidl spokesman has since confirmed that construction has now started on the site.

They added: “We can confirm that construction is now underway at our site in Wrexham. We are extremely grateful for all the support that we have received so far, and would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding whilst we enter this next phase of the development.”

Councillors approved the scheme despite 365 people signing a petition calling for a better use to be found for the site.

Consultants acting on behalf of rivals Asda, who have a store over the road, also submitted objections amid concerns about the impact on traffic in the area.

However, a Wrexham Council planning officer said the overall increase in vehicle movements would not be significant.

Wrexham cabinet member for business/economy, Terry Evans said work beginning on the site was a positive move.

He told the Leader: “I think it’s a good thing to be honest. The site has been vacant for many years and I am happy that the construction has finally started.”

"Soon we will have a landmark on that site again and it's also going to bring more jobs into Wrexham which can only be a good thing."

Lidl is yet to confirm the demolition date.
