Growing up there were two things I loved on TV - those dancers you saw on weekend scheduling (think Royal Variety Show), and Miss World.

I can't explain either. But the latter of the two was big business, still is, and spawned endless competitions across the country, with generations of women vying for various titles.

Such local titles have included Miss Wrexham Lager and Miss Delyn, with regional rounds for Miss Wales.

Today we take a glamorous journey through the Leader archives at some of the young women who dared to dream.
