AN MP had an eye opening tour when he visited a wastewater treatment works near Llandudno Junction.

During his behind the scene tour of Ganol wastewater treatment works, Robin Millar, who was elected as MP for Aberconwy in 2019, was able to see how solids, extracted from wastewater, were treated and dried before being taken to Five Fords treatment works near Wrexham.

Here, it is treated to create gas that can be converted to electricity to run the site as well as supply gas to the National Grid.

The process at Ganol is part of a wider scheme across North Wales by not-for-profit company Welsh Water.

Ifan Jones, North West Catchment Manager for Welsh Water said; “We were pleased to be able to welcome Mr Millar to site to show him how we deal with wastewater from over 80,000 customers from his constituency at our Ganol treatment works.

"It was also an opportunity for Mr Millar to hear more on how we work closely with local and national partners to help protect the environment and reduce our carbon footprint by generating energy on a number of our sites.”

Mr Millar said: "As I have a background in engineering, I found the visit to Ganol fascinating from a processing point as well as learning more about how the wastewater is treated on the site and the challenges that Welsh Water face with people flushing things down the toilet that they shouldn’t such as wipes, cotton buds and nappies.

“I found the visit very informative and look forward to visiting some of their other sites soon to learn more about the other side of the company and how they provide customers in the area with clean drinking water."

Ifan Jones added: “We do everything possible at the treatment works to help protect the environment, but we would also ask that customers help us by not disposing anything they shouldn’t down the toilet or drain."
