ROADS in Flintshire have become a 'race track' due to an increase in speeding, a councillor has had.

New figures show that in Flintshire alone, dozens of people were killed or seriously injured on roads last year.

In 2019, 70 people were killed or seriously injured in road traffic accidents in Flintshire, Department for Transport figures show.

This was a rise on the year before, when there were 63.

Of last year's total, five were fatalities – down from six the year before.

The figures represent all accidents that happened on a public road and involved at least one vehicle, horse rider or cyclist.

The Leader has previously reported that residents and councillors across the county are getting annoyed with the increasing incidents on roads.

Shotton in particular has gone from 'bad to worse' with a number of incidents making the town a 'ghost town'.

Cllr Mike Evans said: "We have a lot of speeding traffic going through our side roads, mainly to avoid the congestion on the main road and with having more and more vehicles parked on the road and pavements it has become increasingly more dangerous. Especially for the elderly and Children.

"Also in the early hours of the morning and late in the evening when we haven't got the daily congestions, we do have a few boy racers using the main road as it is a race track."

In 2019, 65 people were killed or seriously injured in road traffic accidents in Wrexham, Department for Transport figures show – the same number as the year before.

Of last year's total, three were fatalities – up from one the year before.

In Flintshire, the total number of casualties, which includes non-serious injuries, fell from 541 to 231 between 2009 and 2019.

In Wrexham, the total number of casualties, which includes non-serious injuries, fell from 461 to 205 between 2009 and 2019.

A Welsh Government spokeswoman said: “One life lost is one too many.

"We are working to introduce a new law that will see the speed limit on restricted roads in Wales change from 30mph to 20mph as the rule, not the exception.”

Across Britain, 29,588 people were killed or seriously injured last year – a slight decrease on the year before.
