A picture says a thousand words, so they say but there's one picture saying not quite enough.

Derek Smith, who lives in East Sussex, posted an appeal and picture on the Old Photos & Memories of Rhos & District Facebook group.

He said: "I am hoping someone can help. This is a photo of my father (middle front row) in a football team. My picture has 'Johnstown F.C. 1936' on the back, whereas my sister's version has 'Ruabon F.C. 1936' on the back. Is there anyone that can recognise any of the players so as to shed light on the exact team?"

On seeing the appeal, Rob Owen, originally from the Wrexham area, got in touch from Thailand but did admit his information didn't give a definitive answer.

He said: "Ruabon FC was formed in 1873 and played only for a very short while - competing in the Welsh Cup only in 1877 and in 1878. They were dissolved in 1879.

"Another team, called Ruabon Rovers FC was founded in 1872 but was dissolved and merged with Plasmadoc FC along with Ruabon Volenteers (odd spelling!) to become Ruabon Druids.

"They too were dissolved though - in 1927 - but merged with Acrefair United FC to form Druids United, known simply as Druids FC. That doesn't help much regarding the photo though, except to suggest that neither Ruabon nor Johnstown FCs existed as such in 1936.

"Druids FC combined with Rhosymedre FC to form Rhosymedre Druids FC who played on the Church Field in Rhosymedre.

"Despite this new pairing, Druids still faced financial trouble and amalgamated once more in 1923 with Acrefair United FC to form a new club Druids United.

"Druids United FC continued to play in the area until they too amalgamated, with Cefn Albion FC in 1992, to form Cefn Druids FC, who still carry on the name as Cefn Druids in the Welsh Premier League.

"Druids FC became Wrexham and District League Champions in the 1936/37 season. Could the photo therefore be of Druids FC in 1936?"
