A MARATHON of easy, short walks have been created across Newtown for exploring the town while getting fit and healthy.

Paula Scott, who helped develop the walks said: “We have been adding walks for weeks but have now completed coverage of the town. If anyone walks them all they will have covered a distance equivalent to a full marathon.

“We challenge everyone to try all the walks and post their favourite on the Walking Newtown Facebook page.”

The walks are free to download from the Walking Newtown webpage. There are short strolls, themed activities and three accessible walks.

Each short stroll explores a neighbourhood of the town and includes a little bit of country or green space. They are all circuits so anyone can pick them up at the point nearest their home or workplace.

There are also town centre walks exploring the history and nature of the town. These theme walks make interesting and informative activities for children and adults.

Mike Davies, chair of Walking Newtown said: “Walking is one of the best and safest activities so we have posted these walks for people to follow and enjoy. Wherever you live or work in town, there is a walk near you.”

Since 2012, Walking Newtown has created 16 countryside walks totalling almost 90 miles.

Working with Powys County Council, members have installed steps, bridges and 62 self-closing pedestrian gates. Although work has been suspended because of coronavirus, there are plans to continue.

Mayor Cllr David Selby said: “We are truly blessed in Newtown with green spaces throughout our town that provide wonderful and varied walks that we can all complete.

“During lockdown many more than usual have been out and about exploring our town.

“I would admit I have discovered new views and new vistas that I had not seen before following the Walking Newtown maps.

“Whether you have an hour or all day there is a lot to explore around us without needing a car. I thank the Walking Newtown team for their maps and encouragement to exercise and enjoy some of what our town has to offer.”
