RESIDENTS in a Wrexham village are being encouraged to get involved in a creative competition.

Last year Penycae held its first scarecrow event - with about 80 entries all over the village.

Organiser Catherine Evans has confirmed this year's event is now underway and is encouraging more people to get involved.

"We have decided to make it an annual event and we're having a little competition this year," she said.

"This time the theme is films and TV and we've had about 23 entries so far.

"We've had some great scarecrows - including Mary Poppins, Peter Rabbit, Fireman Sam, The Mad Hatter, Batman and Spiderman.

"It's been really nice to see people going past and having a laugh because some of them are really funny.

"We have a map on our Facebook page where they are all pinpointed so people can spot them."

Mrs Evans said the competition is open until the end of August and there will be a poll on Facebook to judge the entries.

Prizes donated for the event include £100, knitted scarecrows and crafted jewellery from villagers - as well as a meal voucher from Penycae Football Club.

"We're hoping to get more entries now the summer holidays are here," Mrs Evans added. "It gives the children something to do."
