A HELICOPTER assisted police and a rescue team after a woman sustained a serious leg injury at the top of the Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall.

The ambulance service was also called out to the incident near Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant on Saturday afternoon, with the woman taken to casualty.

A spokesman for North East Wales Search and Rescue team who assisted with the incident, said: "This afternoon we were called by Dyfed Powys Police to assist a woman with a serious leg injury at the top of the Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall.

"Due to the difficult location and expected long stretcher carry, with the associated delay getting the casualty to hospital, we requested the assistance of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency helicopter from Caernarfon.

"We managed to drive one of our landrovers to the top of the falls with a team from the Wales Air Ambulance Charity, but the very rough ride down would have been extremely uncomfortable for a casualty in a stretcher.

"Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust also attended.

"Team members assisted the Winchman Paramedic to move the casualty to a suitable winch location."
