AN ASPIRING Wrexham football coach has spoken about how he has adapted his summer plans to help children engage with football virtually.

Liam Davies, 18, was due to coach at a summer camp in America – but the coronavirus pandemic has meant his plans to travel to the United States have been pushed back to next year.

The Rhos Aelwyd FC player says he was contacted by his chosen camp, based in Massachusetts, and was asked if he would be willing to some virtual content for the kids to try at home during lockdown.

The Coleg Cambria student – who is in the process of becoming an FA Wales C Licence registered coach at youth level – said that he went on to start his YouTube channel where he demonstrates a variety of fun activities from his home in Johnstown.

He said: “Because I wasn't able to go out to America, I wanted to be able to make a difference in a different way, and so, I decided to start the channel with the aim of helping as many kids re-engage with football as possible.”

Since starting in April, Liam has amassed hundreds of online views and also started working with a company called Progressive Sports offering 1-1 football sessions for children here in Wales.

He continues: “The response from parents locally has so far been fantastic, with a handful of clubs asking to use my content for their youth teams, and Wrexham Information Service asking to include my YouTube channel in their list of accessible activities for families over the summer holidays.

“Being a young coach myself, getting ready to head to University in Birmingham this September, I have aspirations of becoming as successful as possible in the coaching industry.

“But right now, I want to be able to help young footballers in some of the most difficult times we may ever face, and helping them re-engage in their favourite sport is the start of putting a smile back on their faces.”
