A FLINTSHIRE town has seen a "surge" of community spirit in recent weeks, a business expert has said.

Non-essential shops across Wales were allowed to re-open from June 22, provided they took "all reasonable measures" to keep to the two-metre distancing rule.

Joanna Douglass, business and regeneration officer at Mold Town Council, said the move has had very positive results so far.

She explained: "Following the opening of non-essential retail on June 22, adaptions have been made to the town centre in Mold to assist shoppers and businesses reopening to operate effectively, whilst adhering to the required social distancing requirements.

"I’m pleased to report many businesses have reported good trade since re-opening which is unsurprising given the fantastic range of independent shops and nationals with have in Mold – there is really no need to shop anywhere else.

"I am in awe of the community spirit that many residents and businesses have demonstrated during this period and admire how traders have adapted so quickly to assist the community in such times.

"Traders have reported a surge in people wanting to support their local businesses, which really does demonstrate community spirit.

"As many of the shops are operating on reduced opening hours, I’d recommend those visiting the town check the opening times of the shops beforehand, I’d also like to ask that members of the public respect the adaptions that are in place to ensure a pleasant experience for all whilst adhering to the requirements set out by local Government.

"It has never been more important to shop local, keeping our towns vibrant and providing a boost to the local economy.

"Our message to the local community is more important than ever; please support your local shops and businesses before considering shopping outside of the town."

Mold Town Council has recognised the massive challenges businesses are facing and is currently developing a ‘Totally Mold’ Shop Local Voucher Scheme.

The only criteria required for businesses is that they have to be located in or trading in Mold (this includes the market traders) and is also open to non-retail.

A town council spokesman said: "It’s free for businesses to join and once signed up, the business will be included in the listing of participating businesses to be promoted.

"Once up and running the list of businesses/service providers will be updated with any new businesses which come on board and we hope as many businesses as possible take part in the scheme.

"By taking part it will ensure all the money stays here in Mold, and it will promote more than ever we need to shop locally."

Businesses interested in signing up to the scheme or finding out more can contact Joanna Douglass via email business@moldtowncouncil.org.uk or telephone 01352 758532.

Members of the public who are interested in purchasing the vouchers once launched can sign up to the town council's email database to receive news which will include the release date of the vouchers.

All those signing up will be entered in to a prize draw and one person will receive £50 of Mold Shop Local Vouchers.

Those interested in entering are asked to send an email with ‘shop local voucher’, their name and email address to events@moldtowncouncil.org.uk
