WREXHAM is well on the way to being recognised as a 'Dementia friendly community'.

The Dementia Friendly Wrexham Steering Group (DFWSG) has been busy working with local businesses, schools, faith groups and voluntary groups with the aim of making the Wrexham County Borough dementia friendly as part of a national programme organized by the Alzheimer’s Society.

The group has offered Dementia Friends information sessions; set up a free-to-attend art group; facilitated attendance at ‘Love to Move’ training; encouraged satellite steering groups to be set up in Chirk, Holt and Gresford; and held fundraising and awareness raising activities.

And despite the impact of the Covid-19 lockdown, Wrexham County Borough Council has been officially recognised by the Alzheimer’s Society as ‘working towards being a dementia friendly authority’, while members of the steering group have undergone training to be able to deliver Dementia Friends information sessions via Zoom or webinars.

The DFWSG said: "We have stayed in contact with organisations and individuals who have asked for our help, particularly those involved with the Art Group which we are sure will be restarting as soon as lockdown easing allows.

"We have been in touch with all community agents in the area to find out if there is anyone living with dementia who may need some extra support and how we might be able to help.

"We are in the process of developing an easy-to-navigate website – so watch out for the launch of that in the near future and keep an eye on our social media pages to find out more."
