The Leader is putting the spotlight on local independent traders and high street heroes across Wrexham and Flintshire...

FOUND IN THE ATTIC, Wrexham

George Dougan runs a family business that looks to find unique pieces for homes or create something new from something old, which has led to some unusual discoveries...

What does the business do/make/sell?

We are a family-run antiques, collectibles and home decor business that has been running for about eight years, and operate within Acorn Antiques & Collectibles Emporium, in Gwersyllt, near Wrexham.

We have two large units inside the emporium but we also take part in many events, fairs and markets throughout the year.

Our aim is to treasure hunt and stock quality, second hand furnishings and exciting items for your home.

Over the years we have up-cycled, recycled and refurbished many unusual items and we love taking inspiration from fellow traders and other crafts people within our network. A funky old door doesn't need to be a door anymore, it could be a table, a book shelf, a bench and who knows what else!

What is your most memorable or proudest moment in business?

The Leader:

Above: When Charles Hanson's Bargain Hunt blue team 'found' treasure at the Oswestry Antique Fair on our stall.

We have had the pleasure of both hosting and taking part in several famous day time TV shows, acting as a courier service for the programmes and sourced special items for a very local haunted house, who also happened to be featuring on the TV recently.

Any strange requests or stories from customers?

The Leader:

Above: Eddie is now the front door mascot.

We were once asked to clear out a cellar as part of a bigger clearance but nobody warned us there was a coffin in the basement. Once the shock wore off, we found out it was an old prop from a fairground horror ride but needless to say it gave us quite a fright.

Stories of the 'local vampire' were shared at many parties after that one.

Anything else we should know?

Acorn Antiques and therefore our units, Found in the Attic, reopened to the public on July 1, taking into account social distancing and support.

We're excited to be welcoming back many loyal and new customers. In support of the current situation we are encouraging customers to visit and wear PPE (as are we) and we are offering over-the-phone payments and doorstep delivery services.

Our wonderful coffee shop at the centre is also back up and running on a reduced menu for al fresco dining and takeaways.
