A DRIVE-THRU coffee shop could be built on the car park of a Wrexham supermarket under new proposals.

An application has been put forward for a 215 square metre cafe on a section of the Asda car park in the town centre, which is currently said to be disused.

Euro Garages has agreed to buy the site off Holt Road subject to receiving planning permission from Wrexham Council.

Although the name of the chain which will run the coffee shop has not yet been announced, the company already runs in excess of 75 Starbucks cafes.

According to the planning documents, the development could create up to 30 jobs.

Consultants acting on behalf of the firm said: “The drive thru will comprise a complimentary use to the Asda store and provide a facility for which there is a requirement within Wrexham.

“It has been evidenced within this statement that here is a clear need for the proposed development and the impact will be minimal.

“A sequential assessment has been undertaken to demonstrate that there are no preferable sites which are suitable, viable or available in the relevant centres.

“The store benefits from a excess in car parking space, the development of an element of the car park as proposed will have no impact on the day to day operation of the supermarket.

“Euro Garages and Asda have agreed a shared spaces strategy in order to ensure that both the superstore and the coffee unit benefit from ample parking provision.”

They added: “In conclusion, the proposed development will result in a series of benefits including significant economic benefits.

“It is therefore respectfully requested that Wrexham County Borough Council grant planning approval for the proposed development of one drive thru unit within the Asda car park.”

The proposed development would result in the loss of 62 spaces within the existing store car park.

However, the company said it was in the section furthest from the foodstore.

The consultants added a review of road accidents had been carried out, which indicated would not have a negative impact on road safety in the surrounding area.

The proposals will be considered by the local authority at a later date.
