There are growing calls for the name of the local Wetherspoons in Wrexham, The Elihu Yale, to be changed due to the association with the slave trade.
Whilst I am not qualified to comment on this alleged association, I strongly believe the name should be changed to commemorate the life of John Parry-Thomas.
John Parry-Thomas was born in Rhosddu, Wrexham, and held the world land speed record in the 1920s, and was tragically killed trying to regain it from the legendary Malcolm Campbell.
He was driving his legendary racing car 'Babs' during this final attempt, which has been restored and is now displayed at the Pendine Museum of Speed.
This brave and brilliant son of Wrexham has not received the recognition he surely deserves locally and the renaming of the local Wetherspoon, in his honour, would go a long way to redressing this and bringing him to a rightful prominence in the local consciousness.
