POLICE have launched an appeal after teenagers have destroyed children's planter boxes at a Bagillt primary school.

North Wales Police issued the appeal for three youths on bikes - believed to be between the ages of 13 and 14 - that were spotted in the grounds of Ysgol Merllyn on Sunday, May 31, between 8.45pm and 9pm.

A spokesman for the force said the suspects – who had their faces covered – kicked some of the wooden planters, and then carried the wood over to the bottom field and set fire to it.

They add that, despite the coverings, one was wearing a distinctive royal blue t-shirt.

A spokesman for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed to the Leader that one crew was called to attend the scene at Foel Gron from their Flint base.

The blaze – which also included some of the dry grass area of the school grounds – was extinguished using one hose reel jet.

Tracy Jones, head teacher at Ysgol Merllyn, said: “I am devastated about the arson attack on the school. Thankfully the fabric of the building wasn’t affected but it had the potential, given the dry weather, to be extremely serious.

“Please can members of the public contact the police if they have any information.”
