CONCERNS have been raised over the lack of public toilets in Wrexham town centre.

Local taxi driver Paula Ellis said public toilets are needed now more than ever as people can no longer just pop to the supermarkets.

Due to the current pandemic, non-essential stores are no longer open and queues to get into supermarkets have increased due to social distancing measures.

As a result, Paula, like many other taxi drivers or people out on their daily exercise, have to use their toilet facilities at home.

She told the Leader: “It’s a daily struggle for most taxi drivers who rely on pubs and supermarkets to use normally.

“Everywhere is closed and the supermarket waits are too long, we don’t have time to wait around.

“I’ve had a lot of conversations from elderly customers as they walk around looking for somewhere to go during the day for their essentials and there are no toilet facilities.”

Paula said that the current crisis and risk of Covid-19 does need to be factored in, however providing basic needs such as a toilet should be a priority.

She added: “Essential shops are open in the town centre, yet you can’t go and use a toilet so if you queue for a long time and need to use one, there are no options unless you walk to a supermarket and wait there but that’s too long.”

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “We closed public toilets following Welsh Government advice and will re-open them when that advice changes.”
