A GROUP of Travellers have set up camp on Whitby Park in Ellesmere Port.

Cheshire Police have confirmed they were called to the unauthorised encampment on Sunday evening (May 24).

Officers attended and will continue to monitor the site.

Cheshire West and Chester Council said the group will be leaving on Thursday.

The encampment is close to one of the park's football pitches and is a popular spot for dog walkers.

In a statement, Cheshire Police said: "At around 7.30pm on Sunday 24 May officers were called to reports of an unauthorised encampment at Whitby Park in Ellesmere Port.

"Police attended the site and found approximately five caravans present.

"Officers are continuing to provide passing attention to the site and anyone with any concerns should speak to an officer."

A Cheshire West and Chester Council spokesperson said: "There are five caravans on the park, the group has been visited this morning to speak with the families and carry out welfare assessments.

"The families will be leaving on Thursday."
