DELYN’S Assembly Member is urging people in work across the area who are not already in a trade union to mark May Day this year by joining one.

An easy way to do this is by visiting the Wales TUC website and clicking ‘Join a Union’ to see more about what different unions offer in terms of workplace and wider representation.

This comes as more people may have work related concerns as we deal with the ongoing impact of COVID-19 on the workplace, particularly with regards to health and safety, and protecting the health and the health of others.

Hannah Blythyn AM said: “Many constituents have been in contact with me regarding concerns about their employment and workplace related issues.

“During my time working for a trade union, I saw first-hand the different unions can make both in the workplace and the wider community. Now – more than ever – people should be either joining a trade union if they are not in one or going to their union for support if they are already in one.

“Everyone has the right to join a trade union, wherever they work, regardless to whether their workplace formally recognises trade unions.

“Trade unions exist to protect your rights at work, from pay and conditions, to health and safety as well as offering training opportunities and legal advice.

“Whether you have concerns about being asked to continue working, or what the business you work for closing due to the pandemic means for you, it is important that people know their employment rights. The best way to do this is through your trade union, so this May Day, join a trade union.”

People are able to report any concerns relating to workplace health and safety compliance through their trade union, the Wales TUC or Flintshire County Council.

Hannah Blythyn has also put together information on what the Welsh Government, Flintshire County Council and the Wales TUC Cymru are doing to support workers during these challenging times.

The 'Know Your Rights' leaflet can be viewed on the Member’s Facebook page or copies are available by contacting her directly at Hannah.blythyn@assembly.wales or 01352 762102.
