NORTH Wales Police is reminding people that they will continue to deal with incidents while agencies are on hand to offer support during the coronavirus lockdown.

Unfortunately, there is an expectation around the world that domestic violence will rise as the pressures imposed on relationships mount during the lockdown.

There is also a concern that the reporting of incidents may fall because victims are spending so much time with their abuser.

Two North Wales-based agencies are reminding the community of the services they offer and are urging people to contact them if they need support.

The Domestic Abuse Safety Unit (DASU) North Wales operates a 24/7 service for women, men and their children affected by domestic abuse. DASU's services are available in Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham, offering advice, support, advocacy and refuge accommodation.

Specialist case workers are continuing to offer telephone and on line support to existing and new clients and all services remain available during this difficult time.

Gaynor Mckeown, Chief Executive Officer of DASU, said: “We know that the lockdown and having to stay at home presents everyday difficulties for everyone, especially for those affected by domestic abuse. This is a time when our services are needed more than ever.”

“Our staff are working as normal to support new and existing clients. Please get in touch if you or someone you know needs support as we are here to help you during this crisis".

If you or someone you know are affected by domestic abuse please ring DASU on 01244 830436 or the Live fear free helpline on 0808 80 10 800 for support and advice. If you are afraid and in immediate danger then call 999 where specially trained officers will assist you and support you to contact DASU.

Another agency offering support is Gorwel, run by the housing association Grŵp Cynefin.

Gorwel provides support to the homeless, victims of domestic abuse and people over 55 who need assistance to continue living independently, across Gwynedd, Anglesey and Denbighshire.

Gorwel manager Gwyneth Williams said: “It is imperative that there is a collaborative approach to tackling domestic abuse, particularly during the coronavirus pandemic.”

“We are working closely with organisations like North Wales Police to ensure support is there for those who need it. Our services range from refuges, which are places of safety to specialist provision for children and young people.”

“We urge anyone who is experiencing domestic abuse to get in touch with us or to contact Live Fear Free on 0808 80 10 800 or by text on 078600 77 333.

Alternatively, if you require help immediately, but can’t talk in safety, dial 999 followed by 55 to indicate that you can’t talk, but need help.”

PC Mike Taggart Strategic Domestic Abuse Officer at North Wales Police said; “This is a difficult and stressful time for everyone, especially for victims of domestic abuse, who are forced to spend more time with their abusers.”

“There is never an excuse for domestic abuse of any kind; whether it’s violence or controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour.”

“Our message to victims is clear. Don’t suffer in silence. We are here for you and our specially trained officers will support you throughout and deal firmly with offenders

“There are a wide range of bodies that can offer advice and support including DASU and Gorwel and I would encourage anyone concerned with this issue to consult professionals. “
