A DEESIDE group has launched an initiative in a bid to help hundreds of vulnerable people in the community.

Members of Deeside Round Table voted in favour of donating £500 a month for up to an initial six months, which will be donated to those in need.

The money will pay for around 33 essential food hamper ‘car packages’ which aims to provide ‘a little bit of comfort’.

These will include bread, milk, eggs, cheese, vegetables and fruit and will be delivered directly to the homes of the vulnerable members by Mold Community Shop.

Supermarket Morrisons also pledged to help by donating a pallet of essential non-perishable food items each week.

Member David Mellor said they were 'blown away' by the 'generosity' of Morrisons staff.

He said: “Morrisons saw our video launching the care package campaign and got in touch with us a few days back to offer us a pallet of non-perishable food items every week.

“This has obviously been an amazing gesture as we can now add their donated tins, rice packets, tea bags etc, to the fresh packs that we've paid for, which include milk bread fruit and veg.”

Earlier this month, the first set of care hampers were delivered to Deeside residents with the help of Mold Community Shop.

David added: “This arrangement between ourselves, Mold Community Shop and Morrisons is set to continue every week for months to come.

“A special thank you for Sandra Alexander and Jaq Nield from Morrisons who were the members of staff who nominated DRT to work with on this community care project and who have (and will) organise the pallet for us to collect.”

The group is urging people to contact them with the first name only of a person in the Deeside area who could benefit from a care package. This should include a brief reason why such as lonely or elderly.

Each week, a set-up delivery will be organised.

On a social media post, Deeside Round Table wrote: “Look, we know that 33 essential food hampers a month isn't going to reach everyone who could do with one during these tough times but, hopefully, it'll make just a few people feel re-assured, less lonely, and less likely to push themselves to go to the shops.

“We apologise in advance that our money can only go so far and pay for so many each week and month. Believe us, if we could offer more we would.”

More information and how to nominate can be found on the Deeside Round Table Facebook Page.
