A COUNTY Councillor has helped set up a free school meal collection point in his community to support local families during the coronavirus pandemic.

Since schools closed Wrexham Council have been distributing ‘grab and go’ packed lunches from Council owned buildings including housing estate offices and resource centres.

Due to the absence of a Council owned building in Brymbo, Councillor Paul Rogers was asked by Wrexham Council officers to try and find a local solution following requests from local residents.

Following discussions a free school meal collection point is now operating from the Post Office counter at Brymbo Enterprise Centre.

Parents and carers of children eligible for free school meals can now collect lunches between 11.30am and 1pm daily. The name of the eligible child must be provided upon collection.

Councillor Paul Rogers has thanked staff at Brymbo Enterprise Centre and Wrexham Council for their support.

He said: “Over recent weeks I have been contacted by a number of residents expressing concern about school closures and the impact this may have upon children who rely upon free school meals”

“I would like to thank everyone at Brymbo Enterprise Centre and Wrexham Council who have worked with me to set up this collection point”

“The staff at the Centre have been brilliant in recent weeks maintaining both the nursery for key workers and our much valued Post Office.”

“There has been a lot of positive community spirit in recent weeks with people coming forward with offers of help within the community which is valued as many households will be affected in different ways as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and the measures being taken to reduce the spread of the disease and save lives. I hope that by setting up this service we have been able to help make a small difference.”

The provision of free school meals is being kept under review and may move to a voucher based system in the future.
