A CHARITY leader has been overwhelmed by the generosity of Leader readers to our new campaign to help those on the frontline fight against coronavirus.

Earlier this week, the Leader launched a campaign to raise funds for Wrexham Hospital's League of Friends.

As the country continues to adapt to new restrictions, charities are finding themselves in difficult times.

The League of Friends, which donates vital equipment to Wrexham Maelor, has lost its main source of income after having to close its two stores.

More difficult decisions were also made after staff redundancies had to take place and volunteers were told to isolate and adhere to Government advice.

To give readers a chance to say thank you to those on the frontline, the Leader aims to raise £5,000 for the charity - which will be donated directly back to Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

In just under 24 hours, the fundraiser brought in more than £1,000.

The Leader:

Chairman Margaret Bryden said: "This amount is wonderful but I am not surprised.

"The people of Wrexham and outlying areas have always responded favourably to any request for help.

"My many years as a fundraiser has proved this to me over and over again and I would like to thank all these people for their kindness and generosity."

The funds raised will be donated towards vital equipment which is needed the most.

Margaret added: "Our committee will be asking the medical director and hospital manager at the Maelor Hospital what is needed at this moment in time, so that this money goes exactly where it will be most useful in this awful situation."

The Leader:

Dozens of Leader readers backed the campaign, raising hundreds of pounds in just a short space of time.

Andrew Nicholls who donated said: "A great organisation."

Antony Newnes added: "Our hospital staff deserve our wholehearted support and equipment in these unprecedented times."

Darren Long donated, and said it was a "very worthy cause and worth every penny".
