RESIDENTS have been urged to continue obeying social distancing rules set out this week to tackle the spread of coronavirus.

Wrexham town centre's Acting Inspector Claire McGrady told the Leader that since the measures have been put in place, the majority of people have complied.

"We're very much emphasising the message that people need to stay home and look after eachother," she explained. "The town has been very quiet and we're really appreciative of that - it shows that people are taking this seriously and that's what we want to see."

Acting Insp McGrady said there had been a few instances of groups having to be disbanded however.

Her team put out a warning via social media on Thursday morning, in which a spokesman said: "PCSO Smith on foot patrol in Belle Vue Park this morning.

"Yesterday we had to disperse groups and provide advice to people having a picnic and sunbathing - this is not acceptable.

"We are all in this together. Only go out if necessary and stay two metres away from others."

Reiterating the call to residents, Acting Insp McGrady said: "We have had to disperse some groups so far but they have abided by it.

"We know the weather is glorious outside but we're asking people to refrain and to stick to the Government's advice.

"We stay here for you. We're asking that you please stay home for us.

"We want to make sure everyone stays healthy and away from harm. "If you do have to go to work; hygiene, handwashing and social distancing are essential."

She also said supermarkets and shops which continue to operate - such as those providing essential goods and foods - have seen good spirits from shoppers and staff, adding: "I would like to thank members of the public who have been observing the social distancing advice by using their trolleys to measure out two metres.

"We'd also like to thank the shops and supermarkets, which have been fabulous - especially in supporting NHS workers and vulnerable residents by making sure they get the supplies they need."
