MORE than 4,000 leaflets have been delivered to houses in Denbigh with offers of support including friendly phone calls and prescription deliveries to help vulnerable people during the coronavirus outbreak.

The Denbigh Forget Me Not Project was launched last month to provide a meeting place for vulnerable and isolated people however following drastic measures to restrict social contact in recent weeks it has decided to go to residents directly.

Nearly 200 volunteers have signed up to help people in dedicated areas of the town and surrounding villages such as Trefnant, Bodfari and Nantglyn

Chair Leah Roberts, a palliative care nurse based at Glan Clwyd Hospital, said that while it aims to help people at-risk from the virus, including people aged over 70 or with underlying cardiac or respiratory conditions, it will offer help to anyone who needs it.

She said the initiative will also offer shopping deliveries, lawnmowing and dog-walking while following guidelines on how to stop the spread of coronavirus.

“The project has become much bigger than we had initially intended to be,” said Mrs Roberts, from Denbigh.

“The Denbigh Forget Me Not Project was set up to help people who are elderly or isolated but we don’t want to make any umbrella terms as there are a lot of different people who may need help.”

The Ruthin Coronavirus Group has had more than 45 volunteers sign up in just two days and will offer support including friendly phone calls and shopping as well as stand-by essential housework.

It will carry out its volunteer work with third sector support service Denbighshire Voluntary Services Council (DVSC)

Alice Ferguson, co-chair, said: “There has been a strong sense of community spirit. I’ve been so surprised by the response as there has been so many people wanting to help.

“There have been plumbers and electricians say they are willing to help out when needed and a student nurse has offered.

“We will be keeping in line with social distancing advice and because the situation is always changing and we’re also hoping to provide clear advice on a local and government basis.

“It is at the early stages but there are a lot of people willing to help and it will develop over the coming weeks.”
