A WREXHAM man walked free from court after his actions left a woman feeling ‘unsafe’.

Appearing at North East Wales Magistrates, Liam Robert Griffiths of Welch Way in Wrexham, pleaded guilty to harassment, disclosing private sexual photographs and assaulting a police officer.

The court heard how the 29-year-old was having an affair and his partner, who found out, contacted the victim’s husband to tell him which all started to get ‘a bit nasty’.

On October 26, 2019 Griffiths sent the victims sister a text message ‘containing a naked picture of the victim’.

Prosecuting Justin Espie said he also set ‘numerous messages’ to her mum and the victim herself.

Mr Espie added that North Wales Police were called to an incident in December 2019 involving the defendant where he was ‘threatening to stab himself’.

He was taken to hospital but whilst in the vehicle continued to make a ‘number of threats’.

The court heard how once out of the vehicle; Griffiths also assaulted Police Constable Hutchinson by headbutting him – however the mental heath team deemed his as ‘medically fit’.

In a victim statement read out to the court, it stated these events have had a ‘huge impact’ on her life and her two children have had to move schools which was ‘unsettling’ for them.

She added she has ‘not felt safe at home’ and moved in with her mother but this caused issues due to her tenancy agreement, but she has ‘no intention of returning home’.

The court heard how the victim’s young son ‘blames himself’ for being friends with the defendant’s children.

The statement added: “I genuinely believe he would carry out these threats.

“I want this to be over.”

The court also heard how the family will not go into Wrexham town centre due to fear.

Probation Officer Andrew Connah said Griffiths appeared to be ‘absolutely ashamed of his behaviour’ and at the time was ‘suffering an episode regarding his mental health’.

Although he was originally sectioned, he was found medically fit, however he has since been diagnosed with a personality disorder, but ‘fully understands how the victims must have felt’.

Mr Connah added that Griffiths and his partner have reconciled their relationship and have four children in which he takes his ‘parental responsibility extremely seriously’.

Defence Christie Ankers-Phillips said: “We have a situation where the victim and defendant were in a relationship. My client took the decision to inform his partner he was having this affair. Each party all found out and that’s how it started to get a bit nasty.”

Ms Ankers-Phillips added that they were ‘empty threats’ and Griffiths did not ‘intend to cause her any fear’.

Griffiths received a 12-weeks custodial sentence for the sending of the private photograph, 8-weeks for harassment, 8-weeks for assaulting a police officer – all to run concurrently resulting in a total of 12-weeks imprisonment.

This was suspended for 12-months.

Griffiths must also pay a surcharge of £122 and £85 in costs.
