A WREXHAM woman who filled her trolley with items at Asda and had no intention of paying has been tagged and fined.

Lorraine Thackerberry, 38, appeared at North East Wales Magistrates Court after magistrates ordered a warrant be issued for her arrest to be sentenced for theft.

Thackerberry’s attempt to steal £140 worth of items was thwarted by eagle-eyed staff members on January 14.

Rhian Jackson, prosecuting, told the court how Thackerberry, of Pentre Gwyn, was spotted on CCTV by a store security guard as she had previous convictions for shoplifting at the same store.

It was said that Thackerberry filled her trolley with a number of items ranging from clothes to cleaning products.

She was also spotted on CCTV hiding a number of spirits amongst her goods, as well as multipacks of crisps and laundry washing supplies.

Ms Jackson said Thackerberry made attempts to hide items in shopping bags hanging from the trolley before making her way to the store exit but was stopped by a security guard and the store manager.

Police officers were called to the scene and goods with a total value of £148.16 were taken from Thackerberry who said that the items were for her own use and was not intending to sell them on for financial gain.

Mr Owens, defending, said Thackerberry gave a ‘bizarre’ reason for the offence.

He said Thackerberry’s son worked at the store and the pair had not spoken for a lengthy period of time. Mr Owens says this offensive was one motivated by ‘attention-seeking’ and she wanted to be stopped by her son.

He added that Thackerberry’s previous convictions for shoplifting items came from a ‘place of desperation’ in order to feed her two children.

However, district judge Gwyn Jones said this action may have ended in the opposite way of her intentions – causing her son embarrassment and potentially risking his employment at the store.

Thackerberry was given a fine of £215 and ordered to remain on an electronic tag for nine weeks, forcing her to remain at home overnight until May 12.
