A FORMER hospital worker who ‘enjoys a laugh’ celebrated turning 102.

Nancy Gray, a resident at Chesterton Care Home on Boughton Avenue in Rhyl, celebrated her ‘big birthday’ on Monday, March 10.

Nancy arrived at the home 11 years ago.

She worked at Royal Alexandra Hospital in Rhyl for more than 60 years as a cleaner, until she retired.

Nancy has never been married but looked after her brother and mother.

Nicola Tweedie, deputy manager at Chesterton Care Home, said: “Nancy is kind, caring, thoughtful and enjoys a laugh.

“She is polite and loved by all the staff and residents. She loves to talk, she takes pride in herself and enjoys musical activities with Steve the singer. She also loves her food.

“Her birthday was a really lovely day. I did her hair in the morning and she picked something nice to wear and then Steve, the singer, came down to the home. He sang quote a lot of old music - right back to the music of when she was little.

“She sang a few songs. Some of the other ladies came into the lounge to join her and we had sandwiches and birthday cake.

“She was in her element. She said ‘I’m not 102’.

“She loved the day, she was full of it.

“As soon as she saw Steve she was enthralled.”

Nancy has lived in Rhyl for about 70 years. She is originally from Liverpool and came to Rhyl in about 1950.

She worked in her father’s shop in Liverpool, which was a tobacconist. During the summer she sold ice cream.

Nicola added: “She had a lovely time. Unfortunately the Rhyl mayor [cllr Ellie Chard] couldn’t make it, but she still loved the day. She was really impressed by everything.

“She is an absolute treasure.”
