A SECONDARY school in Wrexham was delighted to welcome Assembly Member Ken Skates to their school.

The Ysgol Rhiwabon School Council greeted Mr Skates to their most recent meeting, which was chaired by Owen Crump of year 10.

The School Council is made up of 35 students, who represent their peers across all age ranges in the school.

The students meet up regularly, which is supported by assistant headteacher, Patrick Bingham.

As part of student voice in the school, and embodying democracy in action, the students were able to ask Mr Skates some thought provoking questions about lowering the legal voting age to 16 and the difference this could make to them and their peers.

They were able to discuss their role as young people in shaping future policies in Wales and the important difference they can make. All the students had an opportunity to share their views on this important issue during the visit.

Mr Bingham, said: "We are proud of the strength of our school council in Ysgol Rhiwabon and grateful for this visit to the school where our students could showcase their role as active citizens in their local community and the wider world."
