THE National Assembly for Wales is set to temporarily relocate to Flintshire as part of a series of outreach visits around the country.

It will result in the whole Assembly, including the Senedd, committees and cabinet switch from Cardiff to conduct a week of business from the county during the summer.

They will hold their full set of meetings at Flintshire Council’s headquarters at County Hall in Mold, along with Theatr Clwyd starting on June 8.

The move has not yet been formally announced, but has been confirmed in an e-mail from the local authority’s chief executive seen by the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Writing to councillors, Colin Everett welcomed the visit and said the council’s own meetings would need to be put on hold during that week.

He said: “This is a real opportunity for us to build the profile of the council and the county with the Assembly, to promote public access to an important institution which can be perceived to be remote from parts of North Wales, and to invite key decision-makers and opinion-formers to local facilities and services of which we are rightly proud.

“This will mean that we cannot hold council and business meetings during that week and will plan to reschedule.

“During this period there will be limited access to parts of phase one of County Hall for security reasons.

“More details on the plans and the accommodation needs of the Assembly, including temporary use of some of our offices and facilities, will follow.”

The decision to hold meetings in the region was first announced last month, but details of the location were not made public.

Speaking in February, the National Assembly’s presiding officer said it would help people in the north to participate in its work.

Elin Jones AM, said: “Engaging all the people of Wales in the work of the Assembly is one of our key priorities – that’s why I’m excited that we’re making preparations to take the Senedd north later this year.

“Initial discussions with the Welsh Government and commissioners have been supportive, and we’re now working on the detail of what the week looks like.

“This initiative builds on the Assembly’s programme to involve and engage with all the people of Wales.

“Meeting in the north will create new opportunities for people to attend and participate in the work of the Senedd. I am excited by the possibilities that are opening up.”
