SOMETHING needs to be done about a town’s death trap, residents have said.

Denise Pope said Wrexham Road in Abermorddu is a ‘death trap’ and is ‘only a matter of time before someone gets hurt’.

She said the road is ‘dangerous’ for motorists who swerve to the other side of the road to avoid potholes and speed through the traffic lights near the primary school.

She told the Leader that one pothole, on the junction of Hawarden Road, is particularly bad and is needing to be filled every few weeks.

The resident added: “That road is quite bad generally.

“I know the potholes are there so I try to avoid them but I was at the back of the lorry and he went to go around the one on the junction but there was a car on the opposite side of the road, how he missed it I will never know.

“It’s really bad, it’s been filled how many times, but it ends up worse.

“Something needs to be done before someone gets hurt. There’s an old aged pensioner across the road who has to walk that side and she’s scared stiff.

“It’s only a matter of time before someone has a crash. We have reported it to the council, a lot of people have but we keep getting told there is no funding. Cars can get damaged; people can get hurt.

“That road is a death trap. We’ve complained about the junction at the top because you can’t see either side.”

The pothole on Hawarden Road has been filled, but residents say it will not last and this does not help the rest of the roads.

She added: “I’ve damaged my car before on this road. Motorists are trying to avoid it but so many don’t see it in the dark they could lose control of their vehicle because they rush to get through the traffic lights.

“Speeding is an issue as well. I’ve been living there for 19 years and traffic is getting worse day by day.

“This road has been an issue for a long time, we need something done. We constantly report it to the council, but nothing gets done, it’s time for the residents to take action.”

Another resident, who did not wish to be named, said the main road is ‘terrible’ and ‘mayhem’.

Cllr David Healey told the Leader he is aware of the complaints and has flagged it up with Flintshire Council.

He added: “People have to have empathy with what those involved filling potholes have to do.

“It’s unrealistic to have them filled in when it’s raining and wet. This is not my ward but there are potholes all over the place in Flintshire.”

Cllr Healey said to do the roads as they would like would cost a ‘significant’ amount of money, of which the County Council does not have.

He said: “We are all fighting for potholes to be filled in our wards. People do have to recognise they won’t be filled in in the wet weather.”

Flintshire Council has been approached for comment.
