CONCERNS over drug dealing and anti-social behaviour around pensioners' homes is to be debated, to the delight of Buckley councillors.

The Leader reported recently how elderly residents at Jubilee Court said they were ‘frightened’ to leave their homes due to 'criminal activity' on a regular basis.

Pentrobin ward councillors Mike Peers and Dennis Hutchinson say they have been pushing for debate and discussion over how residents are allocated to homes by Flintshire Council.

Cllr Hutchinson said: "With the sheltered accommodation at Jubilee Court, everyone knows about the problems but nothing seems to be getting done.

"There are concerns over drug dealing and anti-social behaviour.

"It is because the council's housing allocations don't seem to be working properly. There are no checks being done and the allocations are not being enforced.

"As members, we we are not made aware of who is going to be housed where - that was taken away from us in previous years.

"It's a problem in Victoria Avenue flats as well and it's of great concern."

But there has now been some progress, Cllr Peers told the Leader.

He explained: "I have taken this on as leader of the Independent Alliance Group on Flintshire Council.

"I contacted the chair and facilitator of the council's community and enterprise scrutiny committee and contacted Cllr Dave Hughes, cabinet member for housing.

"Cllr Hughes has jumped straight on it and an officer is to prepare a report to go to the scrutiny committee, so we look forward to that being debated.

"It has taken a while, but we are getting this moving now."

Cllr Hutchinson added: "When elderly people took up tenancies here years ago they never expected these kinds of goings on.

"They are seeing these things day and night and they are on their minds all of the time. "That's not quality of life for older people.

"They want a quiet life. It's very unfortunate that it has gone the ay it has.

"I thank the Leader for bringing this to the fore - it is out in the open now."
