MOTORISTS are being warned to take extra care on a Flintshire road in order to avoid ending up in a ditch.

Buckley councillor Mike Peers told the Leader a car became stuck in a ditch full of water at the side of Drury Lane in mid-December.

Following the incident, he approached Flintshire Council to request signage be put up to warn drivers about the ditch - as those not familiar with the road who had to give way to oncoming vehicles may have assumed they were safely pulling onto a grass verge, Cllr Peers said.

A new sign has now been put up, to the relief of Cllr Peers, as well as fellow Buckley councillor Dennis Hutchinson.

“The spot is between Dobshill Roundabout and Clydesdale Road,” Cllr Peers said.

“A car had come up the lane and for some reason veered off to the left and ended up on its side in the ditch, which is full of water.

“It was there for a few days until it was recovered.

“But I’m pleased to say the warning sign is there now, and it’s there because people might just think this is a grass verge which they can pull over onto.

The Leader:

The area where the car went into the ditch

“It’s been done to try and alert motorists who might not be familiar with the area or the depth of the ditch.

“We’d like people to try and take note in order not to have a recurrence of this.

“Because if, as they’re driving along, they pull over there to let a HGV or another vehicle pass - the danger is they could end up in the ditch as well.”

Cllr Hutchinson added: “I’m very pleased about this - it’s informing people of what is ahead and if they take notice, they should be OK.”

Barry Wilkinson, highway network manager at Flintshire Council, said: “Drury Lane has in the past had edge of carriageway marker posts to highlight a verge and ditch.

“Due to these marker posts being displaced and an incident of a lone vehicle entering the ditch, the council are proactively highlighting this soft verge and ditch with additional marker-posts and a warning sign on the approach to the site.”
