CONCERNS have been raised over a Bagillt road despite safety measures being put in place.

Following a number of accidents along the A548, road safety measures are currently being put in place – however motorists have said this is causing more issues to an already dangerous junction.

Howard Greenhough told the Leader: “This is the trouble with our council. Instead of asking local people's opinions or ideas, they presume to know what's best for us underlings and we should be grateful for it.

“Also, they'll never admit they were wrong and correct it, just look at our speed bumps 20 people out of 4,000 residents apparently wanted.”

Local councillors Rob Davies and Kev Rush have been receiving many complaints over the current work.

Cllr Rush said once work has completed, they will monitor the site closely but due to ongoing work, there is not a lot they can do.

He said: “That junction has caused a lot of aggravation and the roadworks at the moment, but we will monitor the scheme and see what people think. It’s to save lives because it was such a dangerous crossing.

“All we are trying to do is make it safer for the people so there’s no accidents of fatalities. We need to let them finish it first.”

A funding bid has also been placed into Welsh Government for lighting on the junction, but Cllr Rush said in the meantime, they are ‘trying to make it safer for the residents of Bagillt’.

He added: “It differs from what we had before, and new road layouts are always a challenge for everyone, but we need people to be patient until its complete and then we will monitor it.”

Cllr Rob Davies told the Leader that he has been in touch with road safety who will look at the current signage but at the moment it is ‘half a completion’.

He said that although his thoughts on the matter is ‘negative’ and he is ‘still not happy with it’, people should try and wait until the completion.

He said: “On paper it will be safer but it’s difficult to say if it will until it’s completed.

“I’m still not happy with it, you can’t always get what you want, you get what you get but what I think we should do now, is let them complete it and hope and pray nothing bad happens.

“The ignition problems included pulling out from Blossoms and turning any way but mainly right due to the layout. At the moment vision is obstructed.

“As far as the council is concerned everything is to spec. Our best way forward now is wait for the completion and it will then be monitored by myself and Cllr Kev Rush.

“At the moment it causes mayhem but until everything is done properly I can’t really say. We have got to give the council a chance and hopefully there will be no accidents whatsoever.”

The Leader has previously reported several collisions that have occurred on this stretch of road.

Work on a designated right turn is currently being undertaken on the road, but motorists said this is causing more traffic issues in the area.

Flintshire County Council’s Chief Officer for Streetscene and Transportation, Steve Jones, said: “Forming part of a wider package of road safety measures along the A548, and following a number of serious accidents within the locality, Flintshire County Council is currently undertaking safety improvement works to sleeve down the existing A548 dual carriageway within the vicinity of the Blossoms Junction to a singular lane.

“This will enable the provision of a wider central reserve, whilst also providing designated right turn and deceleration lanes.

“This concept has been introduced at various locations along the A548 Coast Road in recent years and has been very successful in eliminating road traffic collisions.”
