CONCERNS have been raised over security at an allotment site in Connah's Quay.

Bill Crease, of the Allotment Association at Mill Lane Allotments said he has contacted the town council to see what can be done to secure the site after rough sleepers have been spotted there.

He told the Leader: "It's really sad, these guys need some place to shelter and it ends up being the allotments. It's sad it happens.

"I've had a plot for about seven years and it happens every winter. You can't blame them but my concern is that my grandchildren come out with me.

"Us plot holders are getting our hands dirty, digging deep and when sharps are being found left lying around, can cause an injury."

In an email sent out to allotment plot holders, he said he believes the rough sleeper has been taking drugs on site.

He added: "The days are getting longer and it is getting warmer in tunnels and greenhouses, a terrific time of year for those of us who get a kick out of germinating seeds and growing our plants.

"But sadly it means that it has come round to that time of year when rough sleepers gravitate to the allotments to take advantage of some shelter.

"Please exercise caution when you carry out your spring clean of polytunnel and greenhouses. I have notified council and asked for their thoughts on how we can realistically secure the site."

A spokesman for Connah's Quay Town Council said: "We are looking into the matter. We will be holding internal meetings to discuss our own plan of action and then we will meet with the Allotment Association in the coming weeks to look at a longer term solution."
